New technique for providing safety illumination for underpasses, and its various physiological, mechanical, and economic implications are examined; basic component of new technique of roadway underpass lighting is wall-mounted, 175- or 250-w mercury, prismatically controlled, integrally ballasted luminaire; series of cost analyses was made, comparing four basic underpass lighting systems.
