Research and development at Northrop Ventura is focused on recovery and landing system techniques for Apollo Moon program; details of steerable three-lobed parachute Cloverleaf which uses double flaps for glide and turn control; results of tests carried out with doughnut-shaped annular parachute; descent and landing system for early Mars landings consisting of drogue chute for deployment at high Mach numbers shortly after peak entry deceleration and heating has occurred, main chute system for deployment at about 90,000 ft altitude and Mach 1 velocity, sensing and control system that initiates deployment and proper sequencing parachutes, and impact attenuation system.
