Paper is confined to Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo spacecraft, whose basic characteristics are compared and analyzed with respect to weight restriction, structural problem, and heat protection; Mercury spacecraft and Apollo Command Module use conical hoop stress-type pressure vessels; Gemini spacecraft and Apollo LEM use reinforced flat surfaces where this gives some design advantages; progress made and experience gained in design of spacecraft resulting in well-developed characteristic technology are summarized.
