Optical pickoff provides satisfactory solution to problem of sensing attitude of aerostatic, electrostatic and cryomagnetic field-suspended spherical-rotor gyros that are invariably operated in space-fixed mode; servos in gimbaled gyros are controlled by optical pickoff to maintain pickoff aligned with rotor, usually parallel to rotor spin axis; operating principles of two types of pickoff, autocollimator and autoreflector, are explained and their performance evaluated; autocollimator accuracy falls in one-tenth to one arc-sec region; autoreflector accuracy is about 1 μ in.; strapdown readout system is capable of measuring with 10 to 100 arc-sec accuracy.
