Report presents results of study conducted to determine magnitude and distribution of stresses normal to tire-soil interface of smooth pneumatic tire towed in air-dry sand; data on induced stresses in soil mass and deflected shape of moving tire were also obtained; peak stresses induced in soil mass by moving tire occurred well ahead of axle; total load on wheel had greatest influence on magnitude of stresses deep within soil mass; application of Fourier series in stress wave analysis is discussed.
