Author refers to paper by J. Johnson, read before Institution of Naval Architects, which he claims reveals qualifying intimacy with steam practice, but superficial knowledge of motorships; two most vital factors in comparison of Diesel and steam propulsion are: annual fuel cost and first cost of motorship; Johnson fails to establish either of these, with any reasonable degree of accuracy, authority or actual performance of motorships; annual fuel cost of motorship and comparative cost of motorships and steamships are given.
