So far as motor ships are concerned, it is probable that direct drive will continue to represent most popular form of propulsion for some time to come, although not to entire exclusion of gearing and electric transmission as was case before war; brief descriptions of latest types of engines built by Harland-Burmeister and Wain, Sulzer, and Doxford.
