Specifications for automotive steels have grown up on trial and error resulting in use of different steels, all of which have given satisfactory service performance; experience has indicated that steels with lower alloy contents can be substituted on basis of equivalent hardenability in most cases; tests on gears and axles, however, have shown that there are other factors which should be given consideration.
