For purpose of discussion commercial vehicles are considered using diesel engine as basis for comparison; limitations of solar, nuclear, and steam power plants, electric drive, motors and generators; comparison of three types of hydrocarbon fueled air breathing engines most suitable for vehicles: captive piston, (diesel and spark ignition engine and their modifications), free piston, and regenerative gas turbine; predictions for future.
