Tests conducted on experimental locomotive "Hawk", produced by Brush Electrical Engineering Co in collaboration with British Railways to further development of single-engine diesel locomotives beyond 3000 hp; limitations on capacity of d-c generators have retarded this development, but recent advances in silicon rectifier design have made it possible to consider generating alternating current and rectifying output to feed d-c motors; development of thyristor inverters; generator for auxiliaries; variable frequency supply; inverter control; switching on and off, etc.
