To obtain traction experience with Rolls-Royce DV8 Vee-form engine, two of 88 Clayton-built diesel-electric type 1 general-purpose locomotives were fitted with DV8T 8-cyl turbo-charged engine; turbo-charging is by single four-entry Holset turbocharger mounted centrally at rear of engine; underframe is designed to support all equipment above and below footplate level without assistance from superstructure and to withstand, without permanent deformation, end load of 200 tons applied at buffers; weight of body and traction and braking forces are taken by conventional dished-type center pivot which has phosphorbronze liner; this type of center pivot facilitates passage over marshalling yard humps.
