Medium-speed marine diesel engines burning fairly good quality fuels have been used for many years in Europe as propulsion engines for river and coastal craft, small passenger and cargo vessels; developments in engine designs and special lubricants enabled them to operate reliably, efficiently and economically on heavy residual "bunker " type fuels; their use is being extended to main propulsion and auxiliary engines of oceangoing passenger and freight vessels; examples of some installations operating on heavy fuels.
