Based on 3-yr experiment in which 14 steam preheating systems and four electric systems were measured for steam, heating oil and current consumption, comparative economy calculation was made for entire sphere of operation of German railroads with regard to future structural changes and possible development of passenger rolling stock; investigations show that conversion to electric train preheating is desirable, in course of which passenger cars must be gradually converted to electric heating only, first preheating installations should be converted on routes with electric overhead wires.
