Review of large range of layouts that have been studied in relation to strike and transport V/S.T.O.L. requirements; effects of changes in wing planform are considered including advantages of variable sweep wings, particularly for supersonic STOL designs or where overloading of supersonic VTOL design is frequent operational necessity; complex interactions between powerplant airflows and normal lifting effects of airframe have considerable effect on performance and are studied in British Aircraft Corp's test facility; typical results are presented for variety of airframe/powerplant combinations.
