Simulation of aircraft using airborne V/STOL simulator is described; program was undertaken to assess influence on handling qualities of backlash and flexibility in various locations in control systems, and various realistic stability augmentation failures in presence of these backlashes; tests were completed before actual aircraft flew and, in addition to providing Canadair with data on backlashes, familiarized company pilots with flying and control system characteristics to be expected.
