Turbulence data obtained from recent flights of U-2 airplanes and from National Severe Storms Project agree in general with results obtained in previous investigations; data show that nonstorm turbulence decreases in intensity and amount with increasing altitude; less than 2% of flight distance was in turbulence at altitudes above 50,000 ft; it also appears that rms gust velocities of composite turbulence patches may be 15 to 20% lower than previous estimates.
