Reference is made to joint efforts of U S Navy and Marine Corps and development of Short Airfield for Tactical Support; heart of system is new long-stroke aircraft launcher and new long-stroke arresting gear, which launches and retrieves aircraft at rapid cycle rate and may be used for all take-offs and landings where conditions require it; applications of military equipment to large commercial jet transports, as well as to small commercial aircraft, are examined; it is shown that elevated airports within city limits are possible; waterfront sites, where approaches and departures may be made without flying directly over city, appear especially attractive.
