Shell Development Co used electric corrosometer in studies of relationship of rusting rates to engine operating conditions; fuel variables indicated that sulfur and halogens in fuel and moisture condensation on cylinder walls cause major corrosive effects; mechanism involving condensation of acidic moisture on cylinder wall during h-p (power) stroke and transport of moisture in oil film past piston rings and through oil circulating system to site of rusting accounts for large effects of induction air humidity.
