Preliminary details of turbofan conversions of T55 engine, produced by Lycoming Div of Avco Corp, Stratford, Conn, are presented; background and development of turboshaft/turboprop family which appear to be most attractive power plants in prospect for subsonic applications requiring unit thrust of order of 5000 lb; specification data; T55 turboshaft engine will be fitted to Boeing Vertol CH-47A Chinook cargo and assault helicopter of U S Army; standard power plant of present production Chinook is T55-L-5, rated at 2200 shp.
