Twin screw cargo ship Elk, built by Brooke Marine Ltd for British Railways, is of open shelterdeck type with machinery aft and designed for carriage of containers, general cargo, perishable foodstuffs and cattle; length oa 228 ft, breadth molded 38 ft 6 in., draft loaded 13 ft 4 7/8 in., deadweight 870 tons; bale cargo capacity 72,774 cu ft; two main engines are Swiss-built Sulzer units, each rated 900 bhp at 250 rpm; plan.
