Examination of influence of various flight performance characteristics on direct flying costs of commercial aircraft whose average cruising speed is more than 1 mi/sec; boost-glide vehicles and vehicles which cruise at constant speed are considered; important technical problem and economic factor is initial acceleration to flying speed, which immediately follows takeoff; both types of vehicles may be expected to have total direct flying costs of less than 10 cents/ton-mi.
