Tests conducted in 8 × 7-ft supersonic test section of Ames Unitary Plan wind tunnel to determine location of transition on three separate hemispheres having absolute surface roughness values of 50, 580, and 2760 microin.; location determined from shadow-graphs and checked by local temperature-recovery measurements; pertinence to reducing aerodynamic heating of ballistic missiles.
