At U S Army Primary Helicopter School, two groups were trained to fly captive helicopter mounted on ground effects machine; one group received special device training; device consists of small, one-man helicopter attached to independently powered ground effect machine by articulated linkage assembly, and operates in real-world, out-of-door environment, providing visual, auditory, and proprioceptive stimuli associated with hovering flight in free-flying helicopter; results show use of helicopter contact flight training device results in reduction in elimination rates from subsequent flight training and in improvements in trainee performance.
