Requirements of service and their effect on design and construction of three new ferry boats built for City of New York's Dept of Marine and Aviation by Levingston Shipbuilding Co, of Orange, Tex; on average working day, e.g., some 60,000 passengers and 3500 vehicles use ferry service; factors in selection of diesel electric propulsion, with separate shafts, are discussed; design data, including tables of weights and hull characteristics, are given for vessel John F. Kennedy, and certain comparisons are made for earlier boat, Pvt. Jos. F. Merrell.
