Effects of ring-stringer eccentricity upon structural optimization of cylinders stiffened with rings and/or stringers of rectangular cross section are evaluated; for cylinders stiffened in circumferential or axial direction alone, optimum externally stiffened cylinders are lighter than optimum internally stiffened cylinders; design details are shown to differ significantly depending upon stiffener position; optimum externally stiffened cylinders are lightest at low R/t ratios, whereas optimum cylinders stiffened internally with stringers and externally with rings are lightest at high R/t ratios, whereby R denotes cylinder radius and t equivalent thickness of stiffened cylinder.
