Tunnel was conceived as combined test bed on which, in addition of aerodynamic tests on full-scale vehicles, functional tests could be carried out; this required development of true airflow conditions around test vehicles and simultaneous reproduction of precise engine output; tunnel, designed to simulate various climatic conditions, including atmospheric temperatures and humidities can develop wind speeds up to 150 km/hr (93 mph); functional tests are performed with program-controlled dynamometer test bench; they include testing of engines under actual road loads and cooling conditions and of heating and air conditioning systems; aerodynamic forces to which car is subjected can be measured with mechanical rotating six-component balance; operation of installation, data logging and processing is carried out automatically by computer.
