Craft with normal operating weight of 165 tons is considered to be optimum size for operation over open coastal waters; it will be capable of maintaining services in seas of up to 12 ft wave heights at speeds up to 70 knots over stage lengths of 100 mi; basic craft will carry 50 tons of payload, equivalent to 34 cars and 174 seated passengers, but alternative versions have been proposed; latter include one carrying 30 cars and 254 passengers, or all-passenger version for 609; SR.N4 is 130 ft 2 in. long; cushion area is 7342 sq ft; maximum continuous power of four Bristol Marine Proteus main gas turbines is 3400 shp.
