Study was made of relationship between speed and density of pedestrians walking on footpath at three different sites in shopping streets; photographic method was used to record data on pedestrian speed, density and flow; times to traverse given length of footway were found for sample of pedestrians, first in terms of number of filmframes and then, by conversion, in seconds; speed, flow and density relations, and range of walking speeds adopted by pedestrians at various densities were determined.
