Resolution is designed for optimum performance while submerged; pressure hull, which is of reduced diameter at ends, is divided into nine main compartments and is deep enough to allow three deck levels; main propulsion is by pressurized water-cooled reactor supplied by Rolls-Royce and Associates Consortium powering English Electric geared turbines driving single shaft and large diameter six-bladed propeller; auxiliary propulsion is by electric motor drawing its power either from batteries (when running deep) or diesel generators (when snorting); 16 A.3 Polaris missiles carried in vertical tubes amidships have range of 2500 mi and are two-stage ballistic units with rocket motors using solid fuel.
