Persistent roll resonance on re-entry vehicles can cause catastrophic increases in vehicle angle of attack; problem is analyzed through physical interpretation of boundary conditions on roll equation for occurrence of persistent roll resonance; result is simple equation that can be used to predict whether or not particular transient resonance case will become persistent resonance situation; boundary equation also implies some of qualitative effects of various vehicle and trajectory parameters on probability of occurrence of persistent roll resonance.
