Basic design requirements and development of Apollo launch escape system (LES); review of previous escape systems is presented to provide frame of reference for Apollo effort; LES requirements are divided into those associated with pad abort, abort in high dynamic pressure region, and abort at high altitudes where absence of aerodynamic stability causes escape vehicle tumbling; description of major launch escape system elements is given together with review of system operation; development of sophisticated digital computer programs, and extensive wind-tunnel program are also presented.
