Method used to increase operational reliability of Apollo gyro by factor of 20; two criteria resulted for forecasting occurrence of primary failure mode; Delta-25 criterion is reasonably accurate in its ability to predict failure; when 25 meru/g (or 0.375°/hr-g) shift in drift due to acceleration along input axis (ADIA) has occurred during testing at one location, been confirmed by second test, and occurred over calendar (storage) period of four months or less; F criterion predicts impending failure when rms value of successive differences in last 11 ADIA data points reaches 10 meru/ g; two methods are roughly comparable when evaluated by usefulness and efficiency indices.
