Shock waves generated in air flow over or through hypersonic vehicle cannot be analyzed by well-known perfect gas relations because of vibrational relaxation and chemical dissociation effects on properties behind shock waves; paper presents simple, rapid and informative analysis for equilibrium or nonequilibrium conditions in range of oxygen dissociation; freestream dissociation effects, which may be important in wind-tunnel testing of vehicles, also are considered; relaxation results presented are compared to those given by other investigators.
