Presentation of analytical method which assumes that, during trial, advance coefficient for propeller behind ship is linear function of torque coefficient only; equivalent of such relation is derived from trial data only, by regression on suitably averaged quantities which incorporate tide-change correction; this yields estimates of speed through water for each run, which show effect of weather without bias, etc; consideration of accuracy of results shows that, given accurate basic measurements, estimates of water speed corrected to calm weather are unlikely to be in error by more than plus or minus 0.1 knot.
