Some of salient differences between commercial and naval design practices and effect of these on hull structural cost; it is concluded as unlikely all diferences can be eliminated even where comparison is limited to nval auxiliary types, because of higher reliability required for naval ships; they have been reduced in areas of hull material procurement, welding techniques and inspection; some progress towards adoption of simpler commercial method has been made; cost differential associated with hull framing system and shipbuilder's preference will be continuing problem; longitudinal framing system offers advantages for naval use, etc.
