Mangone Shipbuilding Co, Houston, builds separately and simultaneously two longitudinal halves of ship, or subsections making up two halves; as major subassemblies are completed, crane transports them from building ways to launching ways; it holds them there while they are blocked in place for welding; two Lima 1200-SC crawler cranes are rated at 110 tons; first machine provided ample capacity for transporting 75-ton half hull of 125 footer at required carrying radius; half hulls of larger ships, however, were too heavy for single crane to transport safely, at required radius, across unpaved ground.
