Requirements of C-5A military cargo include structural capability to sustain abnormally high lateral gust loads, of recovering from upset at limit speed even though horizontal stabilizer is trimmed full airplane nose down, and to provide high degree of reliability; structural design considerations of C-5A empennage as they affected overall design of airplane are presented; details of MADAR (malfunction analysis detection and recording) system which monitors number of subsystems; four independent hydraulic systems supply power for various control surfaces, doors, and other movable devices; analog computer monitors and controls fuel quantity in each of 12 tanks; control system requirements; flutter and fatigue aspects and use of Rational Probability Analysis.
