Pivot point concepts for fighter type aircraft with variable sweep wings are reviewed; vertical pin pivot configuration usually provides lightest structural arrangement; spanwise pivot point location is compromise between aerodynamic considerations and structural weight variations; aerodynamic considerations are usually most influential in overall optimization; Teflon lined journal bearings look very promising for sweep load spectra anticipated for fighter aircraft; service life of variable sweep fighter aircraft can be substantially increased by selecting aft sweep position for maximum possible usage.
