Advent of very powerful navigation computers makes it possible by using statistical filtering techniques to retrieve more of information contained in navigation measurements; navigation system is developed as information-filtering problem; Kalman optimum linear filter is found to apply to navigation problem if some technique is used to account for possible nongaussian maneuver accelerations; two methods are suggested which greatly reduce amount of computation with minimum degradation in performance of system; details are given for alignment and calibration of inertial platform using statistical filtering.
