Study of aircraft trailing vortex systems shed from wings, involving actual flight testing as well as model testing and analytical considerations, has resulted in method for predicting vortex geometry and velocity field downstream of aircraft; it is found that vortex decay can be described by geometric similarity considerations and not by any modification of Navier-Stokes equations; conclusion is based on velocity measurements made through vortex immediately behind test aircraft up to distances of approximately 1000 chord lengths downstream of aircraft; data on which conclusions are based, and test equipment and procedures are presented.
