Review of activities of past five yr resulting in commercial operation of four satellites over Atlantic and Pacific, serving 15 stations; new applications and new problems are discussed such as rapid growth of transatlantic airplane traffic which will make present HF radio-communication systems inadequate; studies of use of satellites as repeaters between aircraft and Earth stations, and NASA experiments, have shown that approach is practical, and proposals are considered for launch of satellite for this application; also under consideration are frequency allocations.
