Many vehicles experience combinations of uniform axial compression and internal or external pressure during launch and operation; results of structural optimization analysis are presented for cylinders stiffened with stringers and/or rings of rectangular cross section, subjected to varying proportions of uniform axial compression plus either external (Pt I) or internal (Pt II) pressure; analysis is similar to that for cylinders subjected to axial compression alone; principal differences relate to effects of pressure on equations for various forms of instability.
