Purpose of longitudinal drains under roads and their effectiveness in lowering water table are discussed; effect of lowering water table on strength of road subgrades and on design thickness of flexible pavements in examined; it is shown that in saturated soils of low permeability, deep drains are ineffective in lowering water-table below formation level and do not significantly increase strength of soil.
