Since first flight of modified V.2 rocket on Apr 16 1946, about 30 tons of research equipment have been carried to heights up to 242 1/2 mi; rockets used are V.2 Aerobee and Viking; two of largest agencies engaged on upper atmosphere research are Air Force Air Materiel Command and Naval Research Laboratory, both of United States; measurements of atmosphere; velocity of sound measured to determine temperature.
