Research undertaken at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works and design factors established; correct spacing of ratios must be selected and number of elements engaged and disengaged at any one time should be limited to 4 or less; simple shift pattern must be used with detents that will not encourage overshifting; other desirable features; development of 8-speed hydraulically controlled stepped transmission for agricultural and industrial tractors; means used to obtain maximum reliability and operator acceptance.
