With high magnetic fields MHD pump-jet is technically interesting; propulsion efficiencies are about 60% for 10 webers/sq m and are primarily dependent on pump inlet velocity and magnetic flux density; optimum geometry is reasonable and relatively insensitive to speed changes; principle limiting losses are hydraulic; analysis is made for propulsion of 2000-ton submarine; possible solutions are given for fabrication of better superconductors, control and gas exhaust systems; dewar and cryostat.
