Thermal protection systems for intermediate duration missions require use of radiation barriers such as superinsulation (multiple foil) or shadow shields; radiation barriers must be in vacuum environment to be effective, which makes them incompatible with operations within Earth's atmosphere; problems involved in applying both foil and shadow shields; weight estimates and experimental data indicate that foil outperforms all nonfoil insulations; shadow shield systems can be extremely light weight.
