Differences between screw and cycloidal Voith-Schneider propeller installed in transverse tunnel of ship are explained, and methods of assessing power required for lateral thrust unit are considered; plot of vessels fitted with lateral thrust units gives 2 curves forming limits of operating range, these being for vessels operating in moderate and in heavy weather; diagrams show method for rectangular section tunnel; flaps are arranged either to blank orifices when on voyage or to act as bow rudders when maneuvering; notes on advantages of Voith-Schneider propellers for various ship types, including dredgers, are given.
