When propeller is operated at zero speed of advance power output vanishes, and thrust itself is only suitable measure of return for input power invested; to compare several kinds of propulsion devices at dead pull condition, and to eliminate size as factor, it is desirable to use non-dimensional (or pseudo non-dimensional) parameters to express thrusting or pulling performance; in addition, emphasis has been placed on ratio of thrust to shaft horsepower.
