Small crew reductions and some improvement in efficiency and safety result from centralized engine-room supervision and control systems and electronic data logging installations now being fitted; further economies can result from installation of central digital control computer sharing its time between all ship's control, monitoring and calculation requirements; this technique is discussed; key device is on-line computer which permits any desired degree of automatic control and operation, because of its high speed, extensive memory and ability to perform pre-programmed operations and to take logical decisions.
